A carnivorous dinosaur from the Lower Jurassic Period, the Cryolophosaurus featured a strange crest that curled up on its forehead. Its name means Frozen Crested Lizard. It was about 21 ft long and weighed about 1,025 lbs, making it one of the largest theropods of its time. The distinctive "pompadour" crest spanned the head from side to side. Based on evidence from related species and studies of bone texture, it is thought that this bizarre crest was used for intra-species recognition.
The brain of Cryolophosaurus was also more primitive than those of other theropods.
